Commodore LenkeDear SYC Friends, Spring is definitely here! I find that this is the most exciting time of the year when all of the new life comes forth. The tulips are blooming as are the apple and cherry trees. Our weather has also turned the corner with warmer days. We had a great Shakedown Cruise to Friday Harbor. There were a total of 16 boats. The only negative was that the harbormaster scattered our boats throughout the Marina. Aaron Jensen provided the taxi service, thanks Aaron! There were a total of 40 people in attendance, with a few driving over and staying in hotels. The San Juan yacht club had a St. Patrick today dinner on Friday night. 21 of our crew enjoyed a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner. They said the food was excellent. By the time that this newsletter goes live, we will have had our Spring meeting on March 30th. We are assuming that there will be good attendance and that the revision of the bylaws will be ratified. We have put the bylaws into an ”easy read” which we felt would be more easily understood. If you were not at the Spring Meeting, I encourage you to go on to the website and read the new bylaws. At the Spring Meeting there were boat cards made available to the members. I was recommending that each family have at least 10 cards available to pass out to prospective members. The card will give them contact information to reach out to SYC. We would be more than happy to send you some of these cards. Reach out to either Jame Witzel or myself and we will ensure that you get some. April 6th is the clubhouse cleanup. They say that many hands make fast work. I’m hoping that we have a good turnout, and the cleanup can be done before noon. We will need a couple of pressure washers, yard tools, and window washing equipment. Aaron Jensen, Rear Commodore, has more information regarding the cleanup and specifically tools and pressure washers which might be needed. In addition to the cleanup, our Vice Commodore, Tyler Clawson and our Rear Commodore, Aaron Jensen have arranged with the United States Coast Guard auxiliary to have free vessel inspections on the transient dock. This will be in conjunction to the cleanup, so plan to bringing your boat for that event and have it inspected. For those of us that have our boats moored in the La Conner Marina, they will come to your slip and do the inspection. This is a great safety check. Following the clubhouse cleanup, we have the Memorial Day (May 24-27) round up at Garrison Bay. The plan is to have another wagon wheel, similar to last year’s event. I’m not sure we can outdo the symmetrical wagon wheel that we had last year. It was perfect. Let’s try! There are STILL several events, which need a host or a team of hosts. Brad Reading and Jerry Carr have volunteered to host the Russell Lindsay Memorial golf tournament at the Steak Fry on Lopez, thanks guys. Teresa and Frank Campbell have volunteered to be part of the whole team, but we could use one more host couple to coordinate the breakfasts. I’m hoping someone will step forward. If you plan on attending the Steak Fry at the Islander Resort, please call Kathy 360-468-2233 to make a reservation for your slip. SYC will not be making reservations for you for this event but you can book marina or hotel at lopezfun.com I have mentioned before, if you have not hosted an event, you don’t need to be overwhelmed by having to do everything yourself, our club is great at sharing the responsibilities of these events. You can team up with another couple and Co-host an event. We do not have hosts for either the Wine & Dine or the Sucia Run. I certainly don’t want to cancel either of these events. Will you volunteer? We still have an open position on the board. The “Web Content Director” will assimilate the different communications from the Board or Membership, oversee the Website (we have a paid web master who is responsible for the programs and updates of our website), provide the web master with the club information, articles, newsletters and photos. This position does not require you to be a computer wizard, just have organizational skills. I appreciate input from our members, so if you have something to share, please reach out to me and share your thoughts or ideas. Sincerely Yours, SYC Commodore Greg Lenke Serenity Vice Commodore ClawsonHello SYC Members, spring is here! We had a great cruise to Friday Harbor with bowling and dinner at the San Juan Island Yacht Club. What a great time. Greg and Brenda did a fabulous job hosting and Dale coordinated the docking details with great precision. Thank you to Brad and Katie Reading for the yummy breakfasts! Opening Day is Saturday May 4th and you will want to be there! Our theme this year is “Under the Sea” and Ronda and I can’t wait to “sea” your creative decorations. Our opening day ceremony starts at 1pm in the clubhouse parking lot with a welcome from Commodore Greg Lenke, flag raising with Port Captain Dale Miller, and blessing of the fleet by Fleet Medical Officer Ronda Clawson. Our boat parade will be at 3pm, with a mandatory captain’s meting at 2:30pm at the clubhouse. BYOB Happy Hour at the clubhouse at 5pm and dinner at 6pm. Our Under the Sea dinner will be alfredo pasta with your choice of shrimp or chicken. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert (party-theme if you like a challenge!) Please RSVP to cruise in decorated boat parade or attend dinner. We hope to Njoy More of you all on Saturday May 4th at our Opening Day of boating celebration!
