Dear SYC Friends,

I look out my window, the wind is blowing and leaves falling to the ground, and winter is soon to befall us. I hope all of you have taken steps to winterize your boats and your homes. I miss the warm weather already and being able to wear shorts. Those thoughts seem to carry me through the winter.  I am sure you have many of the same feelings.

The Octoberfest was a great success.  The dessert looked amazing. Unfortunately, no one saved me a piece.  Thank you again to all of you that worked so hard to make it a great success.

Our Fall Membership meeting is November 9th, 2024. The meet and greet is scheduled for 4:00PM.  Our business meeting will start at 5:00PM with dinner will follow.  The slate of nominees includes Rear Commodore, Secretary, Treasurer, and Membership.  We still have the position of Communication Director unfilled. If you’re interested or know someone who would be good in the role of Communications Director, we will be accepting nominations from the floor during the meeting.  The Family of the Year will also be announced. I’m excited about this award and feel the award is well-deserved.  I hope we have a strong turnout for the Fall Meeting on November 9.  For those of you that want to dress up the theme will be Redneck Yacht Club.

The Reindeer Romp is on the calendar for November 15. We have not had anyone offer to sponsor this event. There is generally a dinner following the romp put on by the spouses of the ladies that are part of the romp. The biggest responsibility of the sponsor is to coordinate with the various merchants in downtown La Conner.  If no one steps forward, we could still have a get together, but it will have to be a no host potluck.

Friendsgiving cruise to Cap Sante is November 29 through December 1.  This is a non-hosted get together for those of you that will not be celebrating Thanksgiving with family. Brenda and I have attended a couple of these and though it’s chilly outside, it’s fun to be able to get together with fellow club members inside our boats. There are generally appetizers on Friday night and a potluck on Saturday night.

I encourage any questions and appreciate the input from our membership, so, if you have something to share, please reach out to me and share your thoughts or ideas.

Sincerely Yours,

Greg Lenke - Serenity

Ahoy fellow SYC members!

Since we purchased our 40’ 1979 Ocean Alexander trawler in 2020 we have been able to “evade and out run” the local Coast Guard, until our recent trip this October to the south sound. As our attention was focused on the Great Seattle Ferris Wheel, a Defender class Coast Guard boat uncloaked on our port. The fleeting thought of going to hyperspace subsided and I had Ronda take control of our vessel and cut our speed in half. This allowed the Coast Guard to match our speed at 2.5 knots. The captain of the guard boat was careful not to mark up my antique vessel as two other crew members came aboard.

We reviewed our vessel documentation, fire extinguishers, PFDs, head pump out zip tied, and flares which I have replaced with the Orion floating SOS beacon. Any anxiety over a coast guard boarding was extinguished since we have been through two auxiliary Coast Guard safety inspections at the SYC dock during the spring cleanup. The auxiliary crew are very friendly and review the safety requirements your vessel should have. If our club is able to secure the auxiliary coast guard this next year, I highly encourage you all to participate and review the safety equipment requirements.

While the safety inspection sticker isn’t guaranteed to ward off the coast guard it will give you the confidence to N'Joy More days on the water knowing your safety equipment is up to par…ty as much as you do. Looking forward to another great year of boating with all of you!

Cheers,

A Helpful Guide to Disinfecting Your Boat’s Water System:
Keeping your boat’s water system clean is super important for enjoying your time on the water! Oftentimes the water in our holding tanks is commingled from many different sources as we travel around the Puget Sound. Here’s a simple, friendly guide to help you annually disinfect it and get your entire freshwater plumbing system sparkling clean, free of any bacteria or lurking pathogens.

Things You’ll Need:
  • Unscented household bleach (5-6% sodium hypochlorite)
  • Clean water
  • A funnel
  • A garden hose
  • Measuring cup
  • Gloves and safety goggles (for a little extra safety)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
  1. Get Ready:
    • Start by turning off your water pump, water heater and any other appliances connected to the system. This keeps everything safe while you work.
  2. Mix Your Bleach Solution:
    • Determine the capacity of your freshwater system including the hot water heater.  The desired ratio is 1/4 cup of unscented bleach for every 15 gallons of clean water capacity. For instance, 100 gallons of capacity divided by 15 gallons would be 6.6, Multiply 6.6 x .25 cups equal 1.7 gallons of unscented bleach. If you have multiple water tanks, it will require you to dose them accordingly. This will create a gentle disinfecting solution.
  3. Add the Bleach to the Tank(s):
    • Using a funnel, carefully pour the bleach solution into your water tank. Take your time!
  4. Fill It Up:
    • Top off the water tank with fresh water until it’s completely full.
  5. Let the Magic Happen:
    • Turn on the water pump and open all the faucets (hot and cold) at a time (don’t forget the shower, toilet and outside shower!). This allows the bleach solution to circulate through the entire system.
    • Keep the water running until you can smell the bleach at every faucet. That’s how you know it’s working!
  6. Wait a Bit:
    • Let the solution sit in the system for 3 to 12 hours (overnight works great!). This is when the disinfecting happens.
  7. Flush it Out:
    • After waiting, run all the faucets again until the bleach smell is gone. I recommend pumping out all of the water.  This may take a little time, so just be patient!
  8. Check Your Filters:
    • If you removed any filters earlier, now is the time to clean or replace them as needed before putting them back in.
  9. Final Rinse:
    • Fill the tanks completely with fresh water one more time and run the system again to make sure there’s no bleach left behind. Due to the capacity of the hot water tank, be sure to run the hot faucets thoroughly until no bleach smell resides.
    • If you are still getting a chlorine smell, refill the system and pump it all out again.
Safety First!
  • Make sure to wear gloves and safety goggles when handling bleach.
  • Keep the area well-ventilated and avoid mixing bleach with other cleaners to stay safe.
And that’s it! You’re all set to enjoy clean, fresh water on your boat.

Happy Boating,

Rear Commodore Aaron Jensen

NEW MEMBER ALERT!

Les and Timi Alluisi.  They own a 28’ Islander sailboat named Bluebird.  They were previous members of Puget Sound Yacht Club and recently moved their new to them boat to La Conner. They joined at the perfect time to meet many SYC members at our various Clubhouse events and see how fun our club is.  Let’s all welcome them with a hearty AAARRRR!

Notice From Officers and Directors:

It is that time of year to update your information for next year’s Yearbook and to ensure we have everyone’s correct address for the Commodore’s Ball.  Please come to the Fall Meeting prepared to verify your mailing address, your phone numbers, and your email addresses (for publication and our club emails).  If you CANNOT make the meeting, please reach out to Jame Witzel to update this information.

From Your Port Captain:

It is my responsibility to raise and lower flags for club events.  If I'm not available, I will strive to ask someone else to act in my place.  However, if you are hosting an event and find me derelict in my duties - I ask that you NOT have me pilloried or keel-hauled but instead prevail upon some kind soul to please raise and then lower and stow said flags for your event.
In order to ensure that the flags will dry between events a rack has been built behind the storeroom door to store the flags.
  • The US Flag and the Club burgee remain up and lit and all times.
  • The WA and Canadian flags are the largest and hung on individual rails.
  • The remaining burgees are joined by a carabiner and hung on 2 pegs.
  • The carabiner allows you to carry the burgees together and hang them on a cleat on the flagpole to simplify raising the flags.
  • Note that each flag is numbered and the cleat for each halyard on the flag pole is also correspondingly numbered.
  • A diagram of the flags order is below
