Commodore LenkeDear SYC Friends, I’m writing this newsletter while sitting at anchor in Garrison Bay as part of the Memorial Day wagon wheel. The weather has been slightly overcast with intermittent rains, but everyone has had a great time, fabulous food and great camaraderie. We had a total of 15 boats in attendance, down from last year but still a good effort to make a wagon wheel. The opening Day festivities went off without a hitch. The weather worked in our favor. It had been predicted to have wind and rain and during the boat parade we had Washington gray skies but no wind or rain. The best entry for the theme “Under the Sea” was from Valkyrie with a combination of both static decorations and live in costume sea creatures. Great job Cheryl and Stephanie. The runner-up prize went to Paradiso. Thanks to Tyler, Ronda, and others, we were served a delicious fettuccine with either chicken or shrimp. It was delicious. Thanks to all of you that brought appetizers or desserts. We had 75 to 80 people in attendance for the dinner. The next rendezvous is the Lopez Island golf and steak Fry. The Marina is nearly sold out. At last count Kathy had indicated a total of 36 boats had signed up. We will plan on the appetizers and meet and greet at 5 PM on the docks. Teresa and Frank Campbell and Gail and Bill Kortum have volunteered to coordinate the breakfasts for both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Thank You! There will be an auction of various items following the dinner and we will also be having a 50-50 raffle, so put some extra Ben Franklin’s in your wallet. July 12-14 is the Family Cruise at Roche Harbor. 20 slips are presently reserved for this event. Those of you that are planning to attend, please email Dale Miller for moorage reservations. Please send an email to Dale at [email protected] or text him at 206-930-4585. He will put everyone on the list which we will then provide to Roche Harbor harbormaster who will make the actual slip assignments. See your assignment when you radio in on channel 78 to the harbormaster on your day of arrival. If you intend on coming early, please make Dale aware that you want moorage before the event or following the event and how many days. *** July 19-21 is the Wine & Dine at Cap Sante. The Wine and Dine is still in need of a host couple or a team of hosts. We have volunteers that have offered to help but we just need a couple to be the leaders. *** I have received a commitment from Skagit Cellars Winery to be the host of the wine tasting at 3 PM on Saturday afternoon. That will then be followed by dinner around 6 PM. At present, we have both of the party barges reserved, as well as 32 slips available for this event. If we end up with more than 32 boats wishing to attend, I’ve been told that we will be able to raft smaller boats in between. July 26-28 is at Telegraph Harbor. We have a total of 14 boats signed up for this international rendezvous, so far. I appreciate input from our membership, so, if you have something to share, please reach out to me and share your thoughts or ideas. Sincerely Yours, Greg Lenke - Serenity SYC Commodore Rear Commodore JensenWith the Garrison Bay gathering still on my mind and a little assistance from AI, I thought we would create and share a fun little poem to remember the occasion. In the waters of Puget Sound, where yachts cruise free, Friends gather 'neath the sky, by the shimmering sea. From the yacht club they come, with laughter in tow, For Memorial Weekend, a grand spectacle to show. Appies abound, with flavors rich and diverse, Each dish a token of friendship, a culinary verse. Cocktails clink and oysters sizzle on the grill, Their savory aroma a testament to the thrill. As the sun dips low, and the waters gleam gold, They form a wagon wheel, memories untold. In Garrison Bay, their spirits take flight, Bound by fellowship, under the stars' gentle light. With each shared tale and hearty embrace, They celebrate friendship, in this tranquil space. Through waves and through laughter, their bond remains strong, In the Swinomish Yacht Club, where they truly belong. Old Fashioned on MarLynn, the boat's deck their stage, As they toast to the moments, and memories engage. Memorial Weekend, a time to rejoice and to play, With friends by their side, in Garrison Bay. Fred Kaufhold gave a highly informative presentation on Skagit Bay Search and Rescue and how important they and their volunteers are to supplement the Police and Coast Guard protections that we have. As promised the presentations for Skagit Bay Search and Rescue and the Safety at Sea presentation are on our members only website. We also included supplemental materials for your reference as well. To find these files: 1) Log onto the Members only section of the SYC website. 2) At the bottom of the screen is a Tab for "Member Resources" - click on this. 3) Click the button for RESOURCES AND PRESENTATIONS 3) Look for the Safety Tool Kit and click on this icon. At this location there are two subdirectories - One is “Safety at Sea" - The other is "Navigating to Alaska and Desolation Sound" You should be able to download and use any of the files found in these directories. If you have any questions, please let me or Randy Miller know. If you have any questions about DSC, VHF calling or MMSI and would like to discuss it in person or on your boat, please ask me or any of a number of the more seasoned hands in our club to join you at any of the cruises coming up this summer.
