Commodore LenkeDear Friends, I’ve noticed the crocus coming up and it is always the first sign that spring is around the corner. I know that several of you have been able to sneak out and enjoy some of the nice weekends on the water, even though it’s cold outside. We had the Sweethearts Dinner on February 10. This was our attempt, as Captain of our vessel, to show appreciation to our first mate. We had 56 in attendance, we had an auction of six special Valentine gift baskets which were auctioned and raised nearly $800. A committee of eight guys and Brenda, hosted everyone to a spaghetti dinner, Caesar salad, lots of special appetizers, wonderful desserts, and special drinks. The next day was Super Bowl Sunday and Vicki Birney posted a Super Bowl party at the clubhouse. We had a great time, and it was certainly an exciting finish to the game, which, as you know, went into overtime. Thanks Vicki! We are looking ahead to some of the upcoming activities of the club with the next event being the Spring Cruise to Friday Harbor. If you plan on attending, please reach out to Port Captain Dale Miller at his email [email protected]. The Spring Meeting is the next event on the calendar. We are still looking for a host or a shared host for this event. You have already received an email from our Secretary, Jame Witzel, with the revised bylaws included in that email. I am requesting that you review the new updated bylaws prior to the meeting. We will be voting on these updated bylaws. We feel that the new bylaws are easier to read and understand, which is our intention. Our Membership Director, Amy Roosa, has proposed a new membership category. The category will be called “associate membership.” For those members who have belonged to SYC for five years and due to personal reasons have sold their boat, will now be able to remain a member of SYC under this category. They will be able to attend all of the functions at the clubhouse. Their membership dues will be significantly reduced. This category is also be included in the new bylaws, which we will be seeking ratification for. The board is also researching the possibility of members being able to attend the spring or fall meetings via Zoom. This will allow our “snowbird members” to attend the fall or spring meeting. This will not apply to the upcoming meeting. We are evaluating this for future meetings. If this is implemented, you will be allowed to zoom in on one meeting per year. The clubhouse cleanup is on April 6. We now have a new roof on the building, the oak dance floor has been refinished, and we can clean up the outside and have a great looking facility. We will need a couple of pressure washers, yard tools, window washing equipment. Aaron Jensen, Rear Commodore, has more regarding the cleanup and specifically tools and pressure washers which might be needed. In addition to the cleanup, our Vice Commodore, Tyler Clawson and our Rear Commodore, Aaron Jensen have arranged with the United States Coast Guard auxiliary to have free vessel inspections on the transient dock. This will be in conjunction to the cleanup, so you can plan on bringing your boat for that event and have it inspected. For those of us that have our boats moored in the La Conner Marina, they will come to your slip and do the inspection. This is a great safety check. Please check the SYC calendar. There are several events which need a host or a team of hosts. Brad Reading and Jerry Carr have volunteered to host the golf tournament at the Steak Fry on Lopez, thanks guys. We are still in need of a host for the dinner portion of that event. I have mentioned before, if you have not hosted an event, you don’t need to be overwhelmed by having to do everything yourself, our club is great at sharing the responsibilities of these events. You can team up with another couple and Co-host and event. We are also working on a sponsorship program for new members. We are going to be having an older member of the club come alongside the new members to assist them in becoming involved in the club, going to events, and answering the questions all new members have. We have an open position on the board. The “Web Content Director” will assimilate the different communications from the Board or Membership, oversee the Website (we have a paid web master who is responsible for the programs and updates of our website), provide the web master with the club information, articles, newsletters and photos. This position does not require you to be a computer wizard, just have organizational skills. I appreciate input from our members, so if you have something to share, please reach out to me and share your thoughts or ideas. Sincerely Yours, SYC Commodore Greg Lenke Serenity Vice Commodore ClawsonHello SYC Members, hard to believe it is already March. We are looking forward to going to the spring opener at Friday Harbor. Last year the bowling was a blast and we had a fabulous dinner at the San Juan Yacht club. This has always been a fun event to kick off the year. I hope you will put this on your calendar to attend: March 15-17 at Friday Harbor. The Opening Day event is May 4th. The theme of the parade is Under the Sea. We look forward to the wonderful creativity and colors in the decorating of the boats. SYC Vice Commodore Tyler Clawson NJoy More Rear Commodore JensenWe call it “Maintenance March” as it is the perfect time to knock out those little projects on your boats, like getting your oil changes and zincs done. Don’t forget about the dinghy too! Impellers should be inspected if not changed annually and the oil in the engine and lower unit should also be done once a year. Throw in a couple new spark plugs and you're ready for the season! Mother nature has teased us a bit with some glimpses of sunshine but the winds and rain are still impeding the adventures of spring and summer. It won’t be long now! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 6th for the Clubhouse Cleanup and free vessel safety check from the Auxiliary Coast Guard. Breakfast casseroles, fruit, muffins and coffee will be served at 9am for those interested. As far as tools needed for the Cleanup go, bring your leaf blowers, rakes, pressure washers, exterior window mops etc… etc…. Whatever you have that you think would be helpful is greatly appreciated as many hands (with the right tools) make light work! Cheers Everyone! 'Rear Commodore Out…. Aaron Jensen Stehekin Port Captain MillerWe are looking ahead to a great cruising season with the next event being the Spring Cruise to Friday Harbor. Friday Harbor Marina will not take reservations at this time, so if you plan to attend, please email me at [email protected]. I will collect your boat information and submit the list to Friday Harbor Marina a couple of days before the cruise. The Marina will then assign slips. When you arrive, call the Marina on channel 66A and they will give you the slip assignment. I am making an effort to update our roster and specifically to collect information about each boat in our fleet. With an up to date and comprehensive roster, you will only need to let me know which events you want to attend, how many people are going, and I can add you and all your boat information to the attendance list for the event. Note that I am asking for Maximum overall length - this includes stuff hanging off the back or the front of your boat. This is the length the marina needs to provide the right slip. I've had a few cases, particularly up north, where they actually measured the spot on their dock and shoe-horned us in under someone else's bowsprit with a lot of dock help! It was that or no slip - so I was grateful! I'm also asking for your MMSI number if you have one. This can make it easier to identify you on the water as well as simplifying ship to ship calls. With Tracy's help I emailed everyone in the club a request for all of this information. if you missed it or don't have it, please email me and I will resend the link. Many thanks to those who already sent in their information. I would also like to continue to promote fellowship within our club and have requested, if you are willing that you share with us your home port and slip number. If you do, I would like to add this information to our Club directory. When visiting a marina it would be nice to know where our members are. The information that I am collecting is linked below in an easy survey format and the request will be included in Dinghy Dock, our private Facebook page. LINK TO FLEET DIRECTORY Or, please feel free to email your updated information to me at [email protected]. If we don’t receive your information, I will reach out to you to update the roster. The information on boat name, make, loa and contact information I should already have, and I will enter this from the membership directory. As long as the directory is up to date and its clear who will be the point of contact - you don't need to repeat it here. But ... try the link to Fleet Directory because it's quick and easy for both of us. Here's to a great Cruising Season Wishing you fair winds a calm sea, Port Captain Dale Miller Silly Goose Comments are closed.
